My son has been playing the drums for a while and was recently given the opportunity to audition to play the drum set for a Drum and Bugle corp. Drum and Bugle corp is so much more than marching bands. The drum corp world and each individual corp values music performance at its best. We were asked to send videos of my son playing on the drum set. They wanted to evaluate his skill set, see if he will be a good fit for their corp.

This seemed easy at first, just use my iPhone to record him, do a couple of takes then send the best video, right? Well, this actually proved to be the most difficult part. We had great takes and other recorded clips but the videos we made did not reflect how great my son was playing. There were many intricate parts in his playing that we just couldn’t hear in the video clips. We would record another take to highlight a certain part in his playing, but we ran into more problems, like the acoustics in the room or certain parts would sound muddy because of echoes. What I thought was going to be something simple turned out to be really difficult. We weren’t satisfied with the videos we created so we had to look for another way.

John is the music director at our church, I knew he has an excellent background in music and music production. I approached John with our problem and asked if he was able to help create an audition tape for my son. He agreed to assist and we set a date for the recording.

When we got to his place for the recording, and while setting up the drum set, I was unbelievably shocked to see all of the equipment involved for the recording. John had a mic for the individual drums, multiple video cameras, and even lighting. My son and I felt like we were in a professional recording studio. John was great at explaining how everything worked together. He focused on the importance of being able to control the sound that is being produced to get quality results. Once we finally started recording and my son was satisfied with his takes, John put in his finishing touches. The whole process only took about 2hrs and the results were amazing. By mixing the individual sounds, making sure that everything sounded and looked perfect, John created the professional grade recording we hoped for.

I think that John is incredibly talented and extremely easy to work with. He made this process look easy and offers the service readily to everyone.
